K - 12 A D M I S S I O N S
Statement of Purpose (Grades K-12)
Kamehameha Schools admits children who show potential and who are able, in a timely and satisfactory manner, to meet all academic, physical and religious activities requirements which together comprise the fundamental nature of a Kamehameha education. Kamehameha admits children on the premise that they have the intent and ability to graduate from Kamehameha.
Kamehameha's policy on admissions is to give preference to applicants of Hawaiian ancestry to the extent permitted by law.
Admission Entrance Points (K-12 Program)
At the Kapālama Campus our major entrance points are kindergarten and grades 4, 7 and 9. Limited vacancies are available for grades 10, 11 and 12.
At the Hawaiʻi and Maui Campuses, our major entrance points are kindergarten and grades 6 and 9. Limited vacancies are available for grades 10, 11 and 12.
Application Timetable
Grades K-12: Applications are available beginning in August. The application deadline for the 2010-2011 school year is September 30, 2009.
Late Applications
Late applications are accepted, however, late applicants will only be scheduled for testing if space and time permits. Late applicants who cannot be tested will not be processed. Late applicants who are tested will be evaluated and considered for admission only if all qualified on-time applicants to that campus and grade level have been offered admission.
Geographic District Allocations (K-12 Admissions Only)
District allocation numbers are obtained from the Department of Education which provides an annual report of the ethnic breakdown of students in every DOE school, statewide, in grades K-12.
Kamehameha uses these figures to determine district allocations. These figures are reviewed annually, and updated as needed, to ensure that even those living in rural and/or neighbor island communities have access to our application and admission process.
KAPĀLAMA:
Students only compete for admission with children who live in the same geographic districts. Oʻahu districts are Central, Honolulu, Leeward and Windward. Spaces in the Leeward and Windward districts may be further divided into rural and non-rural communities as needed to ensure equitable geographic representation. Neighbor island districts are West Hawaiʻi, Molokaʻi/Lānaʻi/Hāna, and Kauaʻi/Niʻihau.
HAWAIʻI & MAUI:
For the purpose of admission to the Hawaiʻi and Maui campuses, the islands of Hawai'i and Maui are not divided into districts nor are there district allocations. Each island is considered a "district."
Boarding
Kamehameha's Kapālama Campus on Oʻahu has a Boarding Community of 555 students in grades 7-12. All boarding spaces are reserved for Neighbor Island students from islands/communities not presently served by Kamehameha's neighbor island campuses. Currently, there is no boarding program at either the Hawaiʻi or Maui Campuses.
Information for Out-of-State Applicants
Kamehameha's K-12 program gives priority to students whose parents or legal guardians are residents of the State of Hawaiʻi: however, out-of-state students may apply and be considered for admission to the following grades: 6, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 12. Kamehameha will not accept applications to preschool or elementary school at any campus from out-of-state students.
Boarding is not guaranteed to out-of-state applicants to the Kapālama Campus. There is no boarding available to out-of-state applicants to the Hawai'i or Maui campuses.
Testing is in October and November. Applicants to grades 6, 7 and 9 must be tested. If an applicant is unable to attend one of Kamehameha's scheduled tests, admission testing may be administered out-of-state by a teacher, counselor or administrator at the applicant's current school. To meet our deadline, all testing must be completed by November 15, 2009. Applicants to grades 10, 11 and 12 are not tested.
Interviews must be conducted in person by one of our staff. Telephone or polycom interviews are not acceptable. Kamehameha is not responsible for the travel expenses of applicants. Only applicants to grades 6, 7 and 9 are interviewed. Out-of-state applicants can arrange to be interviewed during the summer of the year prior to the year they are seeking admission. For example, a student who wishes to apply for the 2010-2011 school year can be interviewed during summer 2009. Interviews may also be scheduled during the Christmas break with at least one month advance notice. However, all interviews must be completed by December 31, 2009.
Residence, Name and Guardianship Verification
Priority is given to applicants whose parents or legal guardians are current and permanent residents of the State of Hawai`i in accordance with KS policy. However, mainland applicants may also be considered for admission to the middle and high school programs. In addition, Kamehameha observes Geographic District Allocations to ensure equitable geographic distribution of spaces. Therefore, upon acceptance, parents must verify the home address listed on their child's application (e.g., through rental or mortgage statements). In addition, if there have been changes affecting a child's legal name, any custody agreements or legal guardianship of your child, you will be asked to submit all necessary court documents prior to your child's enrollment at Kamehameha Schools.
Tuition
The parent's share of tuition, fees and meals for school year 2009-2010 is listed below. This is subject to increase for the 2010-2011 school year:

Tuition may be paid in-full at the beginning of the school year, in two "semester" payments, or in monthly installments.
Financial Aid is available. Applicants who demonstrate financial need may receive partial or full awards to cover tuition and fees.
Kindergarten Admissions - All Campuses
Kamehameha currently has 3 campuses, one each on Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi and Maui. Applications to kindergarten are accepted for all three sites. Each campus has island residency requirements.

Who May Apply to Kindergarten for the 2010-2011
School Year
- Boys born between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2005.
- Girls born between October 1, 2004 and September 30, 2005.
- Children whose parents or legal guardians are residents of the State of Hawaiʻi and reside on the island and district(s) that the school site serves by September 30, 2009.
Number of Openings
Oʻahu: The Kapālama Campus on Oʻahu has 80 openings each year (4 classrooms each with 20 children). Admissions receives about 1,200 kindergarten applications from O`ahu each year. The applicant to acceptance ratio at this site is 15:1.
Maui: The Maui Campus in Pukalani has 40 openings each year (2 kindergarten classrooms). Admissions receives about 250 kindergarten applications from Maui each year. The applicant to acceptance ratio at this site is 6:1.
Hawaiʻi: The Hawaiʻi Campus in Keaʻau has 40 openings each year (2 kindergarten classrooms). Admissions receives about 250 kindergarten applications from Hawai`i each year. The applicant to acceptance ratio at this site is 6:1.
Selection Process
Admission to kindergarten is selective and, due to the large number of applicants, very competitive.
Applicants who meet the September 30th deadline are scheduled for individual standardized testing.
In the first phase of the kindergarten admission process, all applicants are administered a standardized test which covers basic concepts that most four and five year old children should know or be learning.
Once all tests have been administered and scored, the test scores are evaluated.
The applicants are divided by district and sex and ranked by their test scores. Based on the strength of their test scores, a select number of students are asked to participate in the second phase of testing.
Children called back for the second phase of testing will participate in a classroom observation. They will be evaluated on their social skills.
Parents of students invited to participate in the second phase of testing are also asked to submit a Teacher Reference Report (filled out by their child's current preschool or kindergarten teacher). Once the observation testing has been completed, faculty rating committees will evaluate the applicants and determine an "overall" score for each child. The committee will select applicants with the highest overall scores within district, gender and orphan/indigent quotas.
Notification Dates
All preliminary notification letters will be mailed by March 1st. At that time students will be informed of their non-acceptance or they will be asked to return for the second phase of testing.
Students called back to participate in the second phase of testing will be mailed final notification letters by April 30th. Students who participate in the second phase of testing are either accepted or placed in the wait pool.
Replacements from the wait pool may be made at any time prior to the first day of school.
The Kapālama Campus wait pool is active for 4 years (through grade 3).
The Hawaiʻi and Maui Campus wait pools are active for 6 years (through grade 5).
Late Applications
Late applications are accepted, however, we do not guarantee that we will schedule late applicants for testing, due to time constraints. To meet notification deadlines, all testing must be completed by February 15th. Due to the large number of applicants, it is not always possible to accommodate people who missed the application deadline.

Grade 4 Admissions - Kapālama Campus
Applications to grade 4 are accepted for the Kapālama campus only. The Hawaiʻi and Maui Campuses do not have an admission window at grade 4.
Who May Apply to Grade 4 at the Kapālama Campus for the 2010-2011 School Year
Students currently in grade 3, whose parents or legal guardians are residents of the island of Oʻahu by September 30, 2009.
Four districts are recognized on the isalnd of Oʻahu for admission to the Kapalama Campus: Leeward, Windward, Honolulu and Central.
Number of Openings
64 new spaces are available each year for grade 4. Admissions receives about 950 fourth grade applications each year from the island of Oʻahu. The applicant to acceptance ratio for this grade is 15:1.
Selection Process
Admission to grade 4 is selective and, due to the large number of applicants, very competitive.
Applicants who meet the September 30th deadline are scheduled for standardized testing. We test in just two areas: reading comprehension and general mathematics. The testing process takes about 3-1/2 hours. Grade 4 testing is scheduled on Saturday mornings. This year the test dates are:

Applicants to grade 4 are also required to submit their final report cards from grade 2 and their first semester report cards from grade 3 (once they receive them in January). They must also submit two Teacher Reference Reports (one completed by the child's second grade teacher and the other by the third grade teacher).
Once the tests have been administered and scored, they are evaluated, along with the report cards, teacher reference reports and any other items parents submit, by a four-member faculty/administrator rating committee. Committee members rate the applications individually, and then average their scores.
The applications are divided by district and gender, and ranked by their overall score. Faculty rating committees select applicants and make recommendations for admission.
Notification Dates
All notification letters will be mailed by April 30, 2009.
The grade 4 wait pool is active for 3 years (through grade 6).

Admission to Grades 6 and 7 - All Campuses
Kamehameha's Kapālama Campus on Oʻahu operates a two-year middle school, which includes grades 7 and 8. The Hawai`i and Maui Campuses operate three-year middle schools which includes grades 6, 7 and 8.
Therefore, while the middle school "admission window" at the Kapālama Campus is grade 7, at the Hawaiʻi and Maui Campuses, the middle school "admission window" is grade 6. However, the admission process for both 6th and 7th grades at all three campuses is identical.
Students living on the islands of Hawaiʻi and Maui may apply to the Kamehameha campus on their respective island. The Kapālama Campus serves Oʻahu students and neighbor Island students from islands/communities not served by the Hawaiʻi or Maui Campuses. Mainland applicants may apply to any KS campus.

Who May Apply to Grades 6 for the 2010-2011 School Year
Maui Campus: Students currently in grade 5, whose parents/legal guardians are residents of the State of Hawaiʻi and the island of Maui.
Hawaiʻi Campus: Students currently in grade 5, whose parents/legal guardians are residents of the State of Hawaiʻi and the island of Hawai`i.
Number of Openings
At the Kapālama Campus, a total of 176 new spaces are available for grade 7. There are 122 new spaces for day students, and 54 new spaces for boarding students. Admissions receives about 1,200 seventh grade applications each year. The applicant to acceptance ratio for this grade is 7:1.
At the Hawaiʻi Campus, 60 new spaces are available for grade 6. Admissions receives about 250 sixth grade applications to this campus. The applicant to acceptance ratio for this grade is 4:1.
At the Maui Campus, 60 new spaces are available for grade 6. Admissions receives about 250 sixth grade applications to this campus. The applicant to acceptance ratio for this grade is 4:1.

They must also submit two Teacher Reference Reports (one completed by last year's homeroom teacher and the other by the current homeroom teacher).
Interview
Applicants must also meet with a Kamehameha teacher or administrator for a personal Interview. The interview is required of all Middle School applicants. Applicants will be interviewed by staff at the campus to which they are applying. The only exceptions are neighbor island applicants to the Kapālama Campus Boarding Program who may be interviewed by Kamehameha staff on their respective islands. Mainland and foreign applicants must travel to the campus to which they are applying for their interview. Mainland and foreign applicants may schedule their interview and test at their convenience, however, all interviews must be completed by January 15th. Kamehameha is not responsible for the travel expenses of applicants. Telephone interviews are not acceptable.
Writing Sample
All Middle School applicants must complete a Writing Sample. This is a timed writing test. Students are provided with a choice of topics, and must compose an essay in twenty minutes.
Once the tests have been administered and scored, they are evaluated, along with the report cards, teacher reference reports, the personal interview and the writing sample, as well as any other items parents submit, by a four-member faculty/administrator rating committee. Committee members rate the applications individually, and then average their scores.
The applications are divided by district and gender and ranked by their overall score. Faculty rating committees select applicants and make recommendations for admission.

Maui Campus: A total of 12 new spaces are available for grade 9. Admissions receives about 130 ninth grade applications each year to the Maui Campus. The applicant to acceptance ratio for this campus/grade is 11:1.
Hawaiʻi Campus: A total of 36 new spaces are available for grade 9. Admissions receives about 150 ninth grade applications each year to the Hawaiʻi Campus. The applicant to acceptance ratio for this campus/grade is 3:1.

Admissions to Grades 10, 11 and 12 - All Campuses
Grades 10-12 are "replacement" grades. In otherwords, there are no new spaces available. Any students selected for admission to these grades are filling vacancies created when current Kamehameha students leave the school. That is why we do not guarantee that any students will be offered admission to these grades.
Admissions must wait until the end of the school year to get an accurate vacancy count. Therefore, admission decisions will be made in mid-June, and notification letters mailed by June 30th.
Kapālama Campus Residency/Regional District Allocation Information
Priority is given to applicants whose parents or legal guardians are residents of the State of Hawaiʻi although mainland applicants may be considered. At the Kapālama Campus, regional district allocations are not observed in making admission decisions for grade 10-12. Spaces are filled according to gender and day or boarding status.
For example, if a girl from Mililani withdraws from the Kapālama Campus, any female applicant from the island of Oʻahu in that grade level can be considered to fill the vacancy. If a boy from Kauaʻi withdraws from the Kapālama Campus, any male applicant from the neighbor islands in that grade level can be considered to fill the vacancy.
At the Hawaiʻi and Maui Campuses, spaces are filled according to grade and gender.

Applicants to grades 10-12 are required to submit their report cards from the appropriate grades:
* Grade 10 applicants submit their grade 8 report card.
* Grade 11 applicants submit their grade 9 report card
* Grade 12 applicants submit their grade 9 and grade 10 report cards.
