ONLINE LEARNING

THAT CONNECTS COMMUNITIES

TECHNOLOGIES
THAT INSPIRE GROWTH

Kaulu (“ka” meaning “the” and “ulu” meaning “to grow, inspire”) refers to the growth and inspiration that this Kamehameha Schools program seeks to achieve in learners who might experience Kaulu programs, resources, and opportunities. Kaulu draws inspiration from koʻa (coral), our first kupuna born of Pōʻele and Kumulipo. Even as waves, winds, and rains erode ‘āina, koʻa forests buffer us and continue to grow and sustain life. Groves of koʻa from Kalae to Papahānaumokuākea create spaces that energize, nourish, and heal us.

PROVIDING RICH OPPORTUNITIES TO CONNECT

From the microcosms of their individual hexagonal polyp bases to their branching arms and coral heads, koʻa creates an endless array of shapes along our shores. Kaulu also aspires in the coming months and years to expand and take many forms, from resources for kamaiki to programs for ‘ōpio to training and enrichment opportunities for mākua and kūpuna.

PARTNERING WITH THE COMMUNITY

In places where kānaka and koʻa flourish, that vitality depends on the environments where they are embraced. With that core understanding, Kaulu, in all its forms, will partner with community organizations and schools to offer learning opportunities that nourish ‘ōiwi in those communities. So while Kaulu is rooted in the koʻa foundations of Nā Kai ‘Ewalu, its digital nature allows Kaulu to innovate and prepare our lāhui for a future of new possibilities

GROWING ‘ŌIWI LEADERS

WHAT IS KAULU?

Kaulu by Kamehameha Schools Digital is a new digital learning portal that will grow to connect haumāna and ‘ohana to a broad range of community-created learning opportunities built on a Hawaiian cultural foundation with the goal of nurturing ‘ōiwi leaders -- people who use their knowledge, skills and passion to strengthen Hawai’i and its people.

A NEW APPROACH FOR KS

For decades we’ve been partnering with community organizations, and for nearly as long we’ve been sharing learning opportunities online.  Kaulu brings these two approaches together. By using online tools and partnering with community organizations that are offering culturally rich learning opportunities, we can reach more haumāna while growing vital learning communities across the pae ‘āina and beyond.
