Haumāna Showcase

Inspired by the current Hōkūle‘a Moananuiākea voyage, teacher Tiffany Kakinami introduced two art styles to her KS summer school class in a way that was relevant to students, in the context of Polynesian voyaging. Her students (rising fifth and sixth graders) painted Fauvist artworks, experimenting with using unnaturally bright expressive colors, typical of the art style, in imaginative ways to paint a location along the Moananuiākea voyage route. Before putting brush to paper, they first learned more about the Hōkūle‘a voyage and this year’s scheduled port stops. Each student then selected one port stop to research further and then featured that location in their Fauvist painting. The results were great! Check out a few of them below.
