E pule mau ana i nā pule a pau, a me ka nonoi aku ma ka ʻUhane; a no ia mea hoʻi, e kiaʻi ʻoukou me ka hoʻoikaika mau a me ka pule aku no nā haipule a pau. – ‘Epeso 6:18

Pray in the Spirit always with all kinds of prayer and supplication. To that end be alert with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints. – Ephesians 6:18

He manaʻo o ke kahu
To say that our Queen Liliʻuokalani was a brilliant songwriter would be accurate. However, her prose both in Hawaiian and English is perhaps the most graceful of all our aliʻi. To find another hīmeni by our last aliʻi I walked over to Kumu Mahelona with my Queen’s Songbook in hand and asked him if knew of another sacred mele that she penned. Kumu took the puke hīmeni and found “He Pule” on pages 45-47.

What started as a quick question turned into a surreal moment for me as I read and studied what she had created in her heart and mind. That moment of tranquility turned into awe as if I were sitting next to our Queen watching her create the music to the prayer that she so worshipfully wrote.

Our regal monarch’s poetry featured in “He Pule” imbues her steadfast love for Ke Akua, her faith in God’s protection and guidance for her people, and her ʻike of the Holy Trinity. In effect, her trust in Ke Akua was her solid foundation of peace. Read, reflect, and worship our Lord through “He Pule!”

Nānā mai e ka Haku i nā kauā āu e noi aku nei i kou ahonui
Regard us, O Lord, your servants as we ask for Your patience

Hānai mai iā mākou i ka mana lani, hoʻomau kou ʻuhane i ka naʻau maʻema e.
Feed us with heavenly manna, may Your Spirit continue the cleanliness of our hearts.

Hoʻopakele iā mākou ma nā ʻino a pau, hāʻawi i lokomaikaʻi i ka maluhia
Deliver us from all evil, give goodness and peace.

No nā pōmaikaʻi, e hoʻonani ʻia ka inoa o ka makua, ke keiki me ka ʻuhane. ʻĀmene
For blessings, praise be the name of the Father, the Son, and Spirit. Amen
