Kamehameha Schools Financial Aid and Scholarship Services (FASS) programs will undergo changes this year, including timeline changes that will push up nearly all FASS program application windows. All of the education program offerings, including updated timeline and entry point information are now available at www.ksbe.edu/programs.
The biggest changes will occur for the Pauahi Keiki Scholars (PKS) preschool, Kipona K-12, and Nā Ho‘okama a Pauahi college scholarships. These changes are expected to open more opportunities for Hawaiian keiki, while also streamlining the application processes.
Kamehameha Schools is expanding its Kipona Scholarship for the next school year, 2017-2018, to kōkua more keiki beyond the three KS campuses. Kipona will continue to offer a limited number of new kindergarten scholarships and are adding scholarships for grades 4, 6, 7 and 9, in alignment with KS campus admissions openings.
The application period is moving up 2-3 months to allow KS to notify applicant families much earlier. Providing the family with a scholarship decision in April for Kipona and Nā Hoʻokama applicants will give them accurate and timely information to choose the school that fits their family needs. PKS will be notifying applicant families in mid-May followed by Kamehameha Schools’ financial aid for our campus students in mid-June. The applications for 2017-2018 will also ask for 2015 tax documents which would eliminate the rush for families to complete their taxes.
The Kipona Scholarship is a need-based scholarship for eligible keiki who attend or are applying to a KS-eligible private school in Hawai‘i. Kipona applications will be taken from August 15-September 30, aligning with the application window for the Kamehameha Schools K-12 campus window. The KS K-12 and Kipona program application will now be combined in a single application, where you can apply for either of the two programs or both. All applicants will also experience the same application process, including testing and evaluation.
The Kipona program will add varying entry points that will also align with the KS campus programs. Entry points will be island/region-specific, based on the entry point of the campus that services that region. For example, O‘ahu keiki can apply for Kipona for K, 4, 7 and 9, aligning to the Kapālama campus entry points, while keiki on Maui would apply for Kipona in K, 6 and 9, aligning to the Maui campus. For the 2016-2017 school year, KS offered scholarships to over 600 keiki that totaled over $3.5 million and expect to reach more than 900 keiki in 2017-2018.
Nā Hoʻokama a Pauahi is a need-based scholarship program available to students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees at accredited, KS-recognized, post-high institutions in the United States. Applications for college scholarships through Nā Ho‘okama a Pauahi will now be available from October 3, 2016, through February 17, 2017, to align with the new application dates for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). KS is anticipating less document requirements and a simpler, smarter application to rollout with College Board’s CSS profile for 2017-2018. In the 2016-2017 school year, Nā Hoʻokama sent award letters to 2100 native Hawaiian college students totaling over $13 million.
Pauahi Foundation scholarships will also make a slight change, moving up to a January 4 - February 17, 2017, application window.
The Pauahi Keiki Scholars (PKS) program is a need-based scholarship program for eligible keiki who are planning to attend approved, non-Kamehameha Schools, preschools in Hawai‘i. will also have its application window moved earlier in the year to align closer to the application window for KS preschools. The application window for PKS will be from November 1, 2016, through February 17, 2017. For the 2016-2017 school year, PKS offered $18 million in scholarships to over 2,300 preschool aged keiki.
