No Iēhova ka honua a me kona mea e piha ai; ʻO ke ao nei, a me ka poʻe e noho ana ma loko ona.- Halelū 24:1

The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.- Psalm 24:1

I am sure we are all familiar with the ‘ōlelo noʻeau, “he aliʻi ka ‘āina, he kāua ke kanaka” which means “land is chief, man is its servant.”  Although it may seem like a simple ‘ōlelo noʻeau, it has a lot of meaning behind it; it directly shows us that we need to love and serve the land because it provides for us.

Our Spiritual theme, “E mahi a e mālama i ko ke Akua” or “Cultivate and Care for God’s Creation”, explains that we are God’s servants and are to care for the earth as our ‘āina.  Caring for our ʻāina is an important cultural intelligence and practice that we must strive to pursue. However, we can’t forget about God’s greatest creation, humankind.

Jesus teaches us in Matthew 22:36-38 when Sadducees asked, “Teacher which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses? Jesus replied, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.  Second is equally important, Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Cultivating and caring for God’s creation isn’t only for the land. You can love, cherish, and care for the land, but you also need to look in the mirror and love yourself, and love others the same way, for we are God’s greatest creation.
