Kamehameha Schools has a long history of providing financial support to community collaborators across the state to increase educational opportunities for Native Hawaiians. In fiscal year 2015, KS awarded $20.9 million in grants to more than 60 local community organizations through its Collaborations Management Office.

In an effort to improve how KS works with its educational collaborators, the Collaborations Management Office was recently redesigned and renamed the Community Investing Office, reflecting its focus on advancing communities.

The changes align with Goal 2 of KS’ Strategic Plan 2020 which focuses on improving the education system for Native Hawaiian learners by contributing to communities’ collective efforts.

A Streamlined Application Process
The redesign of the Community Investing Office included the replacement of its manual application process with an online process, which makes it easier for community members to apply for collaborations, grants and sponsorships.

The new process will enable KS to notify qualified collaborators in a more timely manner to let them know if they will receive monetary support. It also makes it easier for collaborators to work with KS community liaisons through multiple funding cycles.

“The streamlined process better positions KS to learn about existing and potential collaborators who can help achieve the larger impact we desire,” said Shannon Toriki, Community Investing manager. Toriki’s team includes grants managers Brandon Wong and Rashelle Lee.

The redesign has a three-year timeline. Its implementation will also include comprehensive training for KS liaisons, maintaining operational stability, and ensuring that current community collaborators align with KS’ strategic plan.

“The success of Community Investing is and will continue to be a kākou effort requiring clear direction from KS leadership and authentic relationship cultivation by staff liaisons,” said Toriki. “Our office provides the infrastructure and processes to ensure and report on enterprise alignment, impact, and efficiency. We will also continually explore other types of community investing tools based on national and international trends.”

More about Community Investment
The Community Investment Office is part of KS’ Strategy and Innovation Group. Under KS’ previous organizational structure, community funding was overseen by the Collaborations Management Office under the Community Education and Implementation Division.

When SP2020 launched, KS leaders redesigned the function and office to better align with the trust’s new strategic direction including a shift to a regional model and a broader systems-level perspective.

“With change comes the opportunity for incredible growth,” Toriki said. “Community Investing is committed to supporting transformative progress for the Lāhui while assuring KS achieves not only SP2020, but Vision 2040 as well. It’s an honor to do this work for Pauahi in ensuring a brighter future for us all.”
