The Waiʻanae Coast community will welcome Polynesian voyaging canoe Hōkūle‘a to Pōkaʻī Bay during an arrival ceremony slated for noon on Saturday, Dec. 9. The arrival will kick off two weeks of events and activities aimed at giving West Oʻahu students and community members an opportunity to visit Hōkūleʻa and her crew, and learn about the recent Worldwide Voyage and its Mālama Honua mission promoting cultural and environmental stewardship.
The “Mahalo, Hawaiʻi Sail” visit will also focus on celebrating the work of Leeward Coast community members, educators and crew members. In partnership with the Wai’anae community, Kamehameha Schools’ community facilitator Andrea Dias worked with Kumu Boboy Kaʻawa-Flores to conduct two oli workshops and a lei making workshop as part of the cultural protocol for the arrival ceremony. The workshops were held at the Community Learning Center at Mā‘ili as more than 100 participants attended the sessions, including haumāna from Wai’anae High School and Kamaile Academy.
“I’ve been humbled and honored to witness the Wai‘anae Moku community come together to showcase the waiwai and mana of our kaiaulu,” Dias said. “The Hōkūle’a Mahalo Sail to Pōkaʻi Bay presents a significant opportunity for our kaiaulu to demonstrate their deep aloha for our waʻa, and, more broadly, to demonstrate the Wai‘anae Moku’s approach to lift up our Lāhui Hawaiʻi and its ʻāina momona.”
KS’ Wai’anae Coast Region staff will host a crew member “talk story” session as part of the Huliko’a Kaiāulu Scholar Speaker Series. The event will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 13 at Community Learning Center at Mā‘ili at 5:30 p.m. Community members will prepare lei and pa‘i‘ai for dinner to celebrate the panel that will include crew members Buffalo Keaulana, Brian Keaulana and Duane DeSoto.
