Student clubs

Participation in co-curricular activities has been shown to have a positive effect on student engagement. Kamehameha Schools Maui offers a number of clubs that students may participate in.

Clubs are student driven by student interest, so the number and diversity of clubs differ from year to year. Clubs range from service clubs to academic clubs to and special interest clubs.

Students are encouraged to pursue forming clubs based on their interest with the guidance of an advisor.

Here is a listing of the elementary school clubs offered for the 2015-16 school year.

21st Century Hawaiian Club

Open to grades K-5.

The goal of this club is to combine Hawaiian culture and technology. Students will be taught how to use a variety of Hawaiian resources online. After students learn about the resources they will create a Hawaiian storybook using technology.

Creative Writing Club

Open to grades 3, 4 and 5.

This club will do creative journaling, poetry and fictional story writing. Visual arts and drama will also be integrated with the curriculum. Students will be able to gain techniques that will help them grow as writers.

Praise in Motion

Open to grades 1, 2 and 3.

Club meetings will be devoted to providing time and inspiration to give praise to Ke Akua through various activities. Students will participate in praising through song, sign language and creative movement.

‘Ukulele Club

Open to grades 2, 3, 4 and 5.

This club will help students learn the basic skills in playing the ukulele from strumming and singing to simple picking. The goal is to set a solid foundation in music with the ‘ukulele as the main tool while having lots of fun!

Hip Hop Dance Club

Open to grades K-5.

This is an introductory level hip hop dance club that includes learning dance basics such as beat counting, stretching, body isolations and executing full choreographed dance routines. Students will be able to do basic hip-hop movements, transitions and short eight-count combinations to popular music. Students will build self-esteem, develop discipline, reinforce social skills and teach confidence through dance.

Hui Kupono

Open to grades K-5.

This club will build a solid foundation in discipline, respect for others and humility while learning about self defense. This club encourages students to resolve their problems through healthy positive choices.

Hui Kukui

Open to grades 4 and 5.

Club meetings will involve a variety of activities to enable students to connect with their Hawaiian culture and traditions. From Hana No‘eau, cooking, lei making to strengthening protocol and kokua (service to others.).

Master Gardeners Club

Open to grades K-5.

The Master Gardeners club will provide an opportunity for the students to get their hands dirty. Students will dig into the soil with planting, weeding, watering and harvesting in the garden. They will learn about soil, water and plant quality. This is a fun way to learn about the amazing things our ‘āina can share with us as we mālama it.
