Imua

History

The magazine

I Mua is an annual publication of the Kamehameha Schools Community Relations and Communications (CRC) Group. Marsha Bolson KSK’70 serves as vice president of CRC, and Kekoa Paulsen KSK’77 serves as the director of the Community Relations and Communications Division.

Ed Kalama KSK’76 is the editor of I Mua and the internal communications manager for Kamehameha Schools.

The magazine, which changed from a quarterly publication to an annual publication when the I Mua Newsroom came online in the summer of 2014,  will offer feature articles, photo essays and news briefs which highlight the yearly organizational achievement of the institution. The first issue of the annual reformatted publication debuted in February 2015.

I Mua, and its accompanying I Mua Newsroom, exists to inform alumni, parents, students and friends of Kamehameha Schools of current educational and endowment programs, to generate interest in and support for those programs, and to help alumni maintain close ties to the institution and to each other.

The word

In the Hawaiian language, the word “I Mua” means “to move forward” or “to move ahead” toward a goal. I Mua is also used to signify loyalty to all things Kamehameha or to express a deep commitment to support a feeling, an idea, a person or a cause.

I Mua is additionally used as the “team yell” for Kamehameha athletic teams. I Mua is Kamehameha’s way of saying “go for it,” or “go for broke!”

Kamehameha Schools’ policy is to give preference to applicants of Hawaiian ancestry to the extent permitted by law.
