Health Services

Who we are

Mālama Ola Health Services staff provide clinical assessments, first aid, and initial urgent/emergency care for all students. All health rooms across the campuses are staffed by a Registered Nurse (RN) who may be supported by a Medical Assistant. An Advanced Practice Registered Nurse oversees the care provided by Nurses.

The Health Services Department does not replace your child’s primary care provider or patient-centered medical home but becomes part of your child’s healthcare team or medical neighborhood. Students who are assessed to require more healthcare than can be provided on campus are recommended to receive healthcare in the community.

Services

Services provided by Health Services staff include medical clearance, basic healthcare services for acute conditions, disease management assistance, and medication administration.

Resources and guidance for parents

  • Physical evaluation: Physical evaluations are required upon entry to Kamehameha Schools and when entering grades 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11. We recommend having the KS Physical Evaluation form completed during your child’s annual well-child visit. Once the form is completed by your child’s healthcare provider, please upload it to your child’s profile in the Mo‘omō‘ali Olakino (EHR) Parent Portal. The KS Physical Evaluation form and detailed instructions for logging in and uploading documents to the EHR Parent Portal can be found on the Forms and Checklist page.

  • Health status: Please notify your child’s health room of any changes to your child’s health, including new medical conditions, medications, allergic reactions, activity restrictions or limitations, etc.

  • Absences: To report an absence, please call your child’s unit office. Refer to our Readmit process for details on what you need to do before your child can return to school after illness or injury.

  • Reporting: Please be advised that Kamehameha Schools follows all Hawai‘i Department of Health reporting requirements.

  • Health insurance: For Residential Life students, please ensure a copy of their insurance card is uploaded to the EHR Parent Portal.

  • Respiratory illness: If your child develops respiratory symptoms, they should seek care from their primary care provider and stay home until fever free for 24 hours (without fever-reducing medications) and other symptoms are mild and improving.

When returning to school take additional precautions for 5 days. These can include masking, increased hygiene including hand washing, and monitoring symptoms and potentially testing if symptoms improved but then worsen or new symptoms occur.

If you or your child have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 you are not required to stay home but should monitor for symptoms, seek care from your primary care provider, and follow the recommendations above.

  • Refer to the Forms and Checklists page for forms that may be relevant to your child’s care.

  • For additional information, please see your campus’ student and parent handbook.
