HSTA and Kamehameha Schools to Honor Hawai‘i’s 2015 National Board Certified Teachers

The Hawaii State Teachers Association (HSTA) and Kamehameha Schools will honor the 2015 National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT) at three celebrations on O‘ahu, Hawai‘i island and Maui on Feb. 3, 4 and 5. In 2015, 50 Hawai‘i teachers earned the certification, including nine teachers from Kamehameha Schools.

“We are pleased to recognize the efforts and commitment of these 50 National Board Certified Teachers,” said Corey Rosenlee, president, HSTA. “As a fellow certified teacher, I see this as a significant investment in student learning and it is indicative of our commitment to provide the quality education our keiki deserve.”

On Dec. 4, 2015, the National Board released the 2015 rankings and NBCT lists by state. Hawai‘i experienced an impressive 39.2 percent growth in total number of NBCTs in the last three years, the second highest percentage growth in the nation. Hawai‘i also ranked 31st in the nation for total number of NBCTs at 554 and ranked 14th in the nation by percent of teachers who are NBCTs at 4.7 percent. In 2015, 50 teachers in Hawai‘i earned the certification, 37 of which are newly certified and 13 are newly renewed.

The National Board is recognized as the gold standard in teacher certification and was created by teachers in 1987 to advance the quality of teaching and learning. To earn the certification, teachers must demonstrate that their teaching meets the profession’s standards through a strict, peer-reviewed and performance-based process, similar to professional certification in fields such as medicine.

“Ha‘aheo nā kumu NBCT. E lei mai ‘oukou i ka lei o ka lanakila. The accomplishments of our National Board Certified Teachers bring to light the dedication and perseverance of exemplary individuals who have worked hard to develop their teaching talents and skills,” said Dr. Holoua Stender, executive vice president of education, Kamehameha Schools. “They bring a sense of pride and respect to all of us who have chosen teaching as our life-long profession.”

The HSTA and Kamehameha Schools have planned the following three celebrations to honor the 2015 NBCTs.
