KS alumna receives one of the stateʻs most prestigious educator awards

Kāneʻohe Elementary special education teacher Bella Finau-Faumuina, a 1989 graduate of Kamehameha Schools Kapālama, has been named the recipient of the 2019 Teacher of Promise Award.

Established in 2007 by the National Milken Educators of Hawai‘i, the annual award recognizes a teacher who demonstrates excellence in the field and the highest qualities of a professional educator during their first six semesters in the classroom. 

Kumu Finau-Faumuina was selected for her work with Kāne‘ohe Elementary’s Innovation Academy – an experimental school-within-a-school that provides inclusive learning experiences for students with disabilities. Through her leadership, the academy has seen improvement in student assessment scores, attendance and engagement.

The National Milken Educators of Hawai‘i will honor Finau-Faumuina at their upcoming awards luncheon where the kumu will receive a $1,000 prize from sponsor HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union.
